Chapter 1 The Automobile 25
Summary
❚ The body and frame support, stop, and enclose
the vehicle.
❚ The engine provides dependable, effi cient power
for propulsion and electrical systems.
❚ The computer system uses electronic and electri-
cal devices to monitor and control various auto
assemblies.
❚ The fuel system provides the correct mixture of air
and fuel for effi cient and complete combustion.
❚ Electrical systems operate the electrical-electronic
circuits, components, and devices, as well as pro-
pulsion in hybrid vehicles.
❚ The cooling system maintains a constant operating
temperature for improved combustion effi ciency.
❚ The lubrication system reduces friction between
moving parts inside the engine.
❚ Emission control systems reduce air pollution
produced by the vehicle.
❚ Drive train systems transfer turning force from the
engine crankshaft and/or the motor-generator to
the drive wheels.

Figure 1-26. A basic hybrid power train contains an internal
combustion engine, a motor-generator, large HV power cables,
HV battery, and an HV power control module. If the HV battery
has been plugged into a battery charger overnight, the vehicle
will drive in full electric mode for about 50 miles. When the
battery becomes discharged, the engine starts up to operate
the motor-generator, which begins to recharge the HV battery.
❚ Suspension, steering, and brake systems support
and control vehicle handling, maneuvering, and
deceleration.
❚ Accessory and safety systems increase passenger
comfort, safety, security, and convenience.
❚ A hybrid vehicle uses two or more methods of
propulsion—an internal combustion engine and a
motor-generator—to help improve fuel economy.
