Chapter 11 Animation Composition
Science
2. Research how the bicep and tricep muscles in the human arm work
together. Write a one-page paper to explain how this muscle pair works
and how the animation principle of squash and stretch is applied when the
forearm moves.
Social Studies
3. The human face can communicate using expressions. These expressions are
natural or exaggerated movements. Working with classmates, examine how
each person shows laughter, unhappiness, fear, and surprise. Make notes or
sketches. Work with at least three other classmates. Then, examine yourself
in a mirror as you make the same expressions.
Language Arts
4. Research the newest technology used in motion capture. Form an opinion
on which type of technology could be used to build an inexpensive
mocap studio for your school. Write a one-page paper to explain how new
technology is changing motion capture animation. Conclude your paper
with a recommendation on which mocap system you would want to see
implemented at your school.
Science
5. Springs are common in mechanical-articulation systems. Research the
three major types of springs: compression, tension, and torsion. Create a
PowerPoint presentation to picture and explain each type of spring. Include
examples of how each spring would be animated and demonstrate the
direction of force.
In teams, research one of the following motions as it occurs in nature:
human sneeze, cat jump, human kicking a ball, human swinging a golf club,
horse running. Break down the action using the set of principles of animation
for performing the action. Create a PowerPoint presentation, complete with a
title slide and slides with pictures for each stage of the natural action. Label
each action slide with the corresponding principle of animation.
