Chapter 1 Food Science: An Old but New Subject
Lab Extension
Create a second data table that will list the percentage of new products
in each category for each year.
Calculations
Calculate the percentage of new products in each category for each
year. Percentage equals part divided by the whole times 100. For
example, in 1990 there were a total of 10,301 new products. Of those,
1,165 had claims regarding calories. Therefore, 11.3% of the new
products introduced in 1990 had health claims focusing on calories.
1,165 ÷ 10,301×100 = 11.3%
Questions
1. Which health claims increased in number during each year listed?
2. Which health claims decreased in number during each year listed?
3. Which health claim has a greater number of new products in
1995 than in 1990, 1996, or 2000?
4. Did the total number of new products with health claims increase
or decrease between 1990 and 2000?
