122 Introduction to Microsoft Offi ce Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Editing Text Editing a document is making changes to the text, format, layout, or other aspects of the content. The insertion point is where changes will take place. To set the insertion point, click at the location. The arrow keys on the keyboard can also be used to move the insertion point around the document. Deleting Text The [Delete] key erases one character at a time to the right of the insertion point. The [Backspace] key erases one character at a time to the left of the insertion point. If a word, sentence, or paragraph is selected, either key erases the selection. If text is added, the selection is erased and replaced with the new text. Selecting Text To select an entire word, double-click the word. To select an entire line of text, move the cursor to the left of the line until it changes to an arrow. Then, click once. This selects a line of text, not a sentence, as shown in Figure 4-10. To select a sentence, hold down the [Ctrl] key, and then click anywhere in the sentence. This only works if there is not currently a selection. To select a paragraph, move the cursor to the left of the paragraph until it changes to an arrow, and then double-click. To select the entire document, move the cursor to the left of any paragraph, and then either triple-click or hold down the [Ctrl] key and click once. You can also press the [Ctrl][A] key combination to select the entire document. FYI Holding down the [Ctrl] key before pressing the [Delete] or [Backspace] key will delete all characters in the word from the insertion point to the end or beginning of the word. GS5 Key Applications 1.6 FYI The [Ctrl][A] key combination is used in many software programs to select all content. Click once Goodheart-Willcox Publisher Figure 4-10.
