Chapter 2 The Skills to Compete 43 2.6.6 Education Traditional education has long supported the manufacturing industry in high schools, junior colleges, trade schools, and even four-year universi- ties. Traditional education is still the best resource for training future machinists as well as improving the skills of the current workforce. Different types of schools provide different advantages. Some students want to pursue a four-year degree and so choose the university path. Other students opt for a shorter, more intense program at a technical or trade school. All paths can be beneficial, depending on the needs of the individual student. In this chapter, you have explored the modern manufacturing environ- ment, the scope of work in the manufacturing field, the skills needed to compete, and the training or certification required. As you can see, manu- facturing is a vast field with tremendous opportunities just waiting for the next wave of machinists to move it forward.
