Chapter 2 Protecting Your Online Identity
To protect your identity while applying for
jobs online, remember to do the following.

Do change your passwords often.

Do use at least 10 characters with an
unpredictable capitalization, a number, and
a symbol.

Do record your passwords on a dedicated
hard-copy document to keep track of them
and the accounts for which they are used.
Put a plan in place to protect your mobile
devices from theft. You carry them with you
almost everywhere you go. However, if you
become careless and leave them in an unexpected
location, your identity can be stolen before you
know it. You may also be stuck with a large
telephone bill. To protect your mobile device
from use by a thief, create a password to lock it.
Have the number of your mobile device in a safe
place so that if the unexpected happens, you can
contact your service provider.
Secure Passwords
Recall the strategies you learned in Chapter 1
for creating secure passwords. Implement these
strategies when you create a password for an
online account. Passwords are grouped into
categories: weak, medium, and strong. Figure 2-2
describes these three levels of password strength.
Unfortunately, many people have weak
passwords for even their most important accounts,
such as banking or credit card accounts. When
creating new passwords, keep these tips in mind.

Do not be careless or in a hurry.

Do not use passwords that contain information
that can be easily guessed by someone who
has access to other parts of your personal
information, such as your birthday.

Do not use the same passwords for multiple
accounts or profi les.

Do not use the same password for secure and
nonsecure sources. For example, if you have
favorite game or music sites that require
passwords, do not use the same password
for your bank account.
