Organization The text is divided into five units and 14 chapters to accommodate classes that are presented online or face-to-face. The units may be covered in any order that meets the requirements of the class. However, it is suggested that Unit 1 be the first unit introduced. There are five conceptual units that follow a sequential progression of preparing for a career. Topics covered in these units include Career Planning, Online Presence, Job- Application Process, Landing a Job, and Your Career. • Unit 1 focuses on career planning and the starting line in a person’s job search. The content aligns with the real-world experience of conducting a self-assessment, writing a career plan, and creating a personal brand. • Unit 2 explains the integration of the Internet and social media as tools for the job search. The creation of a positive online presence in the networking process, while learning to protect personal identity, is covered in detail. • Unit 3 provides coverage of some of the most important aspects of a job search— résumés, cover letters, and job applications. The chapters also reflect approaches and methods for creating and tracking employment documents. • Unit 4 prepares job seekers for interview preparation, execution, and reflection. This allows students to experience every aspect of a job interview, from scheduling and participating in an interview to assessing what was learned. • Unit 5 emphasizes what to expect when a job offer is made. Additionally, information is provided about how to make the most of the first job in a new career. New to This Edition The third edition of Connect to Your Career has been updated to reflect current terminology throughout, as well as to include additional content to select chapters. The most notable change is the updated What Employers Want feature, which is now titled Soft Skills. In addi- tion, special features have been updated to reflect current information where applicable. • Chapter 1 Preparing for Your Career provides students with insight regarding steps to begin planning for their future careers. This chapter remains the same, but minor additions were made to reflect current occupational opportunities and titles. • Chapter 2 Soft Skills, formerly titled Workplace Success, was renamed to reflect current workplace terminology. The chapter-opening content was revised and expanded to include a broader discussion of soft skills. Chapter Outcomes, Summary, and end-of-chapter activities were all adjusted accordingly. Additionally, information was added about bring-your-own-device (BYOD) policies. • Chapter 3 Personal Brand explains personal branding and the importance of a 30-second elevator speech. Students have an opportunity to self-evaluate and start creating their personal brand, which will help form the reputations they build in the workplace. The chapter remains unchanged from the last edition. x
