of continuing growth. If they withdraw from friendships and activities,
they may feel isolated and bored.
At this point in the family life cycle, some couples face the dual
responsibility of caring for both their children and parents. Older family
members may need fi nancial help or health care.
Mid-Years Stage
The mid-years stage begins when the last child has left home and
continues until retirement. During this time, parents provide emotional
and sometimes fi nancial support as their children establish their own
families and careers.
Although young adults are full of energy, ambition, and hope,
they may also be aware of their inexperience in parenting and career-
building. They often look to their parents for advice, reassurance, and
other assistance.
Parents often become grandparents during the mid-years stage.
Grandparents and grandchildren may form close bonds, 14-10. If the
adult children are in crisis (for example, suffering from drug addiction),
