Part Five Dimensions of Families
grandparents may fi nd themselves providing all or most of the
parenting for their young grandchildren.
At this stage, parents are not far from retirement, and are usually in
their peak income-earning years. They may be able to save additional
money as they plan in greater detail for this period of their lives.
When the last child has left home, parents typically experience
feelings associated with the “empty nest.” During this time, they
continue to renew their relationship with each other. Older family
members may continue to need fi nancial help or health care. Coping
with their deaths may be difficult as well.
Aging Stage
For most people, this stage begins at the time of retirement. Couples
enter this stage at varying ages. Some take early retirement, but many
continue their careers as long as they are physically able to do so.
The retirement years mean breaking away from work and focusing
on hobbies and interests. Travel and friendships can add enjoyment in
the retirement years. Grandparenting roles may continue to expand as
grandchildren mature, 14-11.
