Families Face Change
All people have problems, but the ways people
handle problems differ greatly. Some people magnify
unimportant matters into gigantic problems.
people refuse to recognize and deal with their
problems. Other people absorb serious problems
maintain happy, successful lives. What is the nature
crises, and why do people meet crises so
differently?ofandcrisisbemayorSomehappinesslives
Acrisis
can be defi
ned as a crucial time
event that causes a change in a person’s life. A
situation may have no ready solution. Time
needed for adjustments to be made.
To some people, a crisis is the end to
and achievement. They live the rest of their
wishing to relive their pasts and dreading their
futures. To others, a crisis serves as an incentive to
achieve new and different goals,
19-1.
Family Crisis Counselor
Family crisis counselors provide
guidance and support to help
families deal with overwhelming or
traumatic problems. These include
natural disasters, sexual assault
or other criminal victimization;
medical illness; mental illness;
thoughts of suicide or homicide;
and loss or drastic changes in
relationships, such as the death of
a loved one or divorce.
19-1
Crises give some people even greater incentives to live productive lives.
