FCCLA Activities Build Leaders
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) helps
students develop leadership skills while addressing important personal,
family, work, and societal issues. FCCLA has more than 200,000 members
and nearly 6,500 chapters from 50 state associations including Puerto Rico
and the Virgin Islands. As the only career and technical student organization
with the family as its central focus, FCCLA is an ideal companion to
Contemporary Living and other courses in your school’s family and
consumer sciences program.
In studying this text, you will see FCCLA activities provided at the
end of each chapter. These hands-on projects help students
• develop character
• analyze and solve problems
• apply academic and communication skills
• build relationships
• recognize the value of diversity
• establish positive work-related attitudes and habits
FCCLA offers many programs and competitions in which students
can participate to develop leadership, college and career readiness skills,
and daily life skills. Some of the programs FCCLA offers that are relevant
to Contemporary Living include the following:
•
STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) Events are
competitive events in which students can participate. State winners
can move forward to the national competition held at the yearly
National Leadership Conference. Members can enter to demonstrate
their leadership abilities and workplace skills.
•
Career Connection is a program that works with students through
individual, team, and competitive events. It helps students discover
their career interests and develop a career plan.
•
Power of One empowers individuals to set and achieve goals
relating to personal, family, peer, and career topics. Students develop
leadership and management skills.
Chapter 14’s “Teen Focus” provides more information on FCCLA,
spotlighting several of the organization’s programs and their value to
students. You can visit their website to learn more about how to expand
your involvement in FCCLA or start a chapter in your school.
