Coach
What Does a Coach Do?
A coach works with athletes to prepare them for competition. A coach motivates the
athlete, provides instruction on improving the athlete’s performance, and may provide
information on nutrition and dietary needs. A coach must be knowledgeable about the rules
of the game and develop strategies to win the event.
What Is It Like to Work as a Coach?
Coaches generally work on a playing field, in a
gymnasium, or in an arena. They are under pressure
to win competitive events leading their team to state
or national championships. Coaches keep a watchful
eye on their players to help them improve their skills
and avoid injuries. They need to be able to resolve
conflicts and confrontations among players, fans, and
officials.
What Education and Skills Are
Needed to Be a Coach?
Coaches need a high school diploma or
equivalent. Most coaches have a college degree
at the associate, bachelor, or master level. Most
coaches have experience playing the sport or
event they are coaching. Coaches need to have
observational skills and the ability to effectively
communicate with those they are coaching.
