Section 4 Technological Contexts
Technology Explained
landscape plant: a plant grown in a controlled environment. These plants provide flowers and
vegetables for home gardeners and landscape contractors.
Below is a picture story of how technology is used to produce these plants:
1. Seeding trays are
selected.
2. Planting mix (soil) is
automatically placed in
the trays.
3. Seeds are automatically
placed in each cell of the
trays.
4. The soil and seeds are
sprayed with water.
5. The moist trays are placed
in controlled environments
until the seeds sprout.
6. The trays with new
plants are placed in
greenhouses.
7. The plants are transplanted
into trays with larger cells
or into plastic retail packs.
8. Throughout the growing
process, the plants receive
automatic watering.
9. Light and humidity are
controlled to produce an
ideal growing environment.
10. The plants are put into
greenhouses when they
are ready for sale.
11. The finished plants are
loaded onto carts and
made ready for delivery to
retailers.
12. The plants are
transplanted into home
gardens.
