Developmental Needs of Young
Adolescents
The ages between eleven and fourteen are sometimes called early
adolescence. If you are in this age group, you may be having many new
feelings. You may feel family members, teachers, and friends are suddenly
expecting a lot from you.
You may wonder whether your friends have some of the same feelings
and thoughts. You may feel that people expect more of you than they
expect of others. It may seem that everyone is watching to see how you
perform. You have many needs during this time of your life. Your parents
and teachers are trying to help you meet those needs.
What are the needs of young adolescents? The basic needs are listed
in Figure 1-6. You should be aware of these needs so you can better
understand yourself and your peers.
