Adulthood
Adulthood is the stage of growth following adolescence. This stage
begins as people gain greater independence. They do not depend on
parents or other adults all the time. Adults support themselves by
holding a job. They take care of problems without becoming upset easily.
They are able to develop good relationships with many people. Adults
enjoy being with family members and friends. They know what they
want from life. They know how to properly express their emotions. They
value communication.
Physical growth levels off during adulthood. Other types of growth
and development, however, will continue. Many people marry and have
children. This adds responsibilities and calls for more learning to take
place. See 1-7. If the goals of adolescence have not been reached, adults
may have problems dealing with marriage and a family. They may not be
willing, or able, to make needed changes.
At times, life may be confusing for adults. Although adults are
more mature than teens, they may sometimes feel as they did during
adolescence. Adults may question who they really are. They may feel
confused about what they want from life. Some adults fi nd growing old
hard to understand and accept. They may try to act younger than their age.
This type of behavior can sometimes cause problems. Aging, however, is a
normal part of life.

early adulthood centers on fi nding a place in society. Every person wants
