The Older Generation
Grandparents are often the third generation of a family. Most
grandparents want their family members to love and respect them.
Respect
is a high or special regard for someone.
Older adults need love and affection as much as every other age group.
Most people need someone to care about them. Older adults have feelings just
like you. They appreciate it when family members are thoughtful, considerate,
and cheerful toward them. Family members show love and respect if they
consider the needs of grandparents when making family plans.
Older adults also need to feel useful and wanted. In some families,
they are not only useful, but are also a big help. Some parents depend on
grandparents to care for children. See 1-11.
Family members may also rely on grandparents to help with other
tasks. Family members should not take this help for granted. They should
let grandparents know how important they are.
Most older adults have many interests besides their families. They may
have hobbies. They may take part in community activities. They may plan
social gatherings with friends. Interests inside and outside the home help
keep older adults active, alert, and happy.
Older adults also need to be as independent as possible. They need
privacy and time to be alone when they live with other family members.
There should be a time and place where they can take care of their own
interests and hobbies. They need a place to keep mail and store personal
papers. They need to have their own spending money and not account to
anyone for it.
Older adults want to be healthy and enjoy life. They want to be able
to take care of themselves. Changes occur in the human body, however, as
people age. These changes may be hard for family members to accept.
As people grow older, their bodies are not as strong as earlier in life.
Certain movements are more diffi cult; such as lifting, bending, kneeling, and
walking. Older adults sometimes become forgetful. If this happens, family
members need to be patient, understanding, and willing to help when needed.
