Parents and children sometimes disagree. Living in close contact
sometimes causes problems. Differences may occur because teens are
starting to become more independent. They may not want to follow some
of their parents’ rules. Teens may have trouble realizing their parents are
still responsible for them.
Parents and children can love and care for one another and still have
differences. This is part of a healthy relationship. Communication can help
settle differences and make relationships stronger.

Brothers and Sisters
If you have the role of brother, stepbrother, sister, or stepsister, one of
your responsibilities is to get along with your siblings. Siblings, or brothers
and sisters, get along differently in each family. In many families, they
support one another. Siblings, however, sometimes argue. They become
jealous. They tease one another.
These actions are normal, but they can still hurt. A child who is
teased may develop feelings of resentment. These feelings are not easy to
overcome. They can create problems in relationships with other people.
Teens should develop a sense of
humor. They should learn not to take
themselves, or others, too seriously. This
will help them ignore some of the teasing
that comes from brothers and sisters.
Siblings should be able to settle their
differences. This is part of growing up.
Brothers and sisters cannot expect their
parents or other adults to always tell them
how to handle disputes.
Getting along is based on
understanding and respect. Spending
time talking and laughing together can
help brothers and sisters get to know one
another better. This will help them realize
they share many of the same needs. It
will also help them develop the patience
and understanding needed to form kind,
caring relationships. See 1-10.
Brothers and sisters can care for each
other and have fun together.
