A
challenge
is a demanding or diffi cult task or situation that can be a
source of distress. All individuals and families face challenges. Sometimes,
they are small tasks like arguing about keeping your room clean and orderly.
Other situations are large family challenges, such as illness, unemployment,
drug abuse, or death. A bigger challenge is often called a crisis. A
crisis
affects
the functioning of a family in negative or positive ways.
Positive effects of a crisis might be when a family member takes a
new job with higher salary that requires moving to another city. This is
positive for the family because of increased income, but could be diffi cult
for children. For each family member, such challenges are real and must be
faced. See 1-18.
Illness or an accident requires adjustments for family members. 1-18
