A
ABC-rated fi re extinguisher: A fi re
extinguisher that can be used on Class A, B, or
C fi res. This type of extinguisher is effective
for the types of fi res most likely to occur in a
woodshop. (2)
adhesive: A substance used to hold other
materials together. (7)
air drying: Seasoning of lumber by natural
means. Lumber is stacked in layers that are
separated with stickers (cross strips) to allow
free passage of air. (1)
aluminum oxide: An abrasive made in an
electric furnace from bauxite. It is used to make
abrasive paper, abrasive cloth, and grinding
wheels. (8)
annual ring: Growth ring of a tree formed
in a single year. The annual ring includes
springwood and summerwood. (1)
antiquing: A fi nishing technique that
makes a new product look old. A glaze is
applied over a base fi nish to create a patina
(appearance of age). (9)
asset: Property owned by a business or a
person. An asset can be in the form of cash or
anything that can be converted to cash, such as
real estate. (10)
automated: Refers to machinery that
performs certain procedures repetitively with
a minimal amount of input on the part of the
operator. (10)
automatically programmed tool (APT):
An early numerical control programming
language developed at the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology. (10)
awl: A pointed tool that can be used to mark
the center point of a hole before drilling. (4)

backing board: A sheet of wood placed
under thin stock so that both can be passed
through a planer. (6)
backsaw: A saw with small teeth and a
narrow blade, set into a thick back. Used to
make fi ne cuts, such as for joints. (4)
band clamp: A clamp consisting of
nylon webbing that is tightened by a ratchet
mechanism. Used to hold round or irregularly
shaped pieces in place while glue dries. Also
called a web clamp. (7)
band saw: A power saw whose blade is a
continuous steel band. The blade revolves on
two wheels, one below the saw table and one
above it. (6)
bar clamp: A type of clamp consisting
of two horizontal bars (jaws) connected to a
vertical bar. A screw on the lower horizontal bar
allows the clamp to be tightened. Also called an
F-clamp or cabinet clamp. (7)
bead: A projecting band or rim formed on
an edge, cylinder, or molding. (6)
belt sander: A power sander that uses a
moving belt of abrasive paper mounted on
rollers to smooth stock. Belt sanders come in
portable and stationary models. (5)
bench rule: A straight, fl at measuring tool
made of wood or steel. Commonly available
in lengths of 12″, 24″, and 36″. Used to measure
short lengths of stock. (4)
bevel: An angle cut made across the entire
edge of a piece of stock. (4)
bill of materials: A form that lists the
amounts, sizes, and costs of all the wood,
fasteners, and other supplies needed to build a
product. (3)
biodegradable: Having the ability to break
down naturally into harmless, nonpolluting
substances. (1)
biscuit joiner: A small, plunge-cutting
circular saw designed to cut matching slots
into pieces that are to be joined. Oval wooden
biscuits (plates) are glued into these slots to hold
the joint together. Also called a plate joiner. (5)
biscuits: Oval wooden pieces used in biscuit
joinery. The biscuits are glued into matching
slots on the workpieces to be joined. (5)
bit: The rotating part that does the cutting
on an electric drill or router. (5)
