well-proportioned fi gure or physique that fi ts
a standard clothing size. Many models have a
fashion sense, with fl air about how garments
should be worn and accessorized. Even if they
do not personally like some of the garments they
must model, they should have a cooperative,
professional attitude at all times.
Professional models have training and
experience. They are hired through modeling
agencies. The agencies show photos and tell about
the models’ experience for show planners to review.
When the model list is narrowed to those being
considered, a “go see” visit is scheduled at no
charge. Models bring their portfolio of photos, try on
garments, and answer questions. Those who are
appropriate for the show are then ‘‘booked” through
the agency. A written confi rmation specifi es the
names of the models, date, time, and pay rate.
Amateur models are not trained or
represented by agencies. If they are affi liated
with the retail store, they are probably paid their
regular wages during the fi ttings, rehearsals,
and show. If they are from the sponsoring civic
organization, they usually model for free. A few of
them may have had some modeling experience,
or may add interest and prestige to the show
because they are community leaders.
Another way to get models is from modeling
schools, located in most major cities. These models
are receiving training and are seeking opportunities
for experience. Students in fashion, acting, or
dancing schools may also be willing to model just
for the fun and experience of being involved, 23-16.

producing original designs, college students
gain valuable experience behind the scenes
when having their creations featured in
professionally-produced runway shows.
