Technical Textile Products
Technical textiles are for industrial uses rather than
for fashion. Commercial business customers purchase
them according to industrial specifications (specs) fi
and performance quality, rather than a fashion look.
Industrial textile marketing takes place at a higher
level of management because decisions often involve
new equipment or different manufacturing methods
that affect the entire company.
The specialized uses of industrial textiles require a
great deal of continuous research and development to
create the most optimum strength or other character-
istics needed. Some industrial fabrics are fi re-resistant or have extreme mois-
ture absorbency. The medical fi eld uses many industrial textiles. Other uses

of industrial textiles and typical products.
The transportation category has the largest market for industrial textiles—
especially for use in automobile interiors and tires. The second largest market
is geotextiles, which are permeable fabrics that can separate, filter, reinforce,
protect, or drain when used with soil. They help to preserve the earth’s sur-
face during projects, such as building roads and structures that might harm
the environment.
Some industrial textiles go into fi nished products, such as awnings, tents,
and luggage. Some are consumed in processes, as filters, twine, and buffingfi
wheels that wear out or are thrown away when used. Composites are textiles
combined with other materials of different physical or chemical properties,
creating a superior and unique material for specific end uses. Such products fi
as commercial hoses, belting, car fenders, boat hulls, and truck tanks may
use composite textiles.
The Home Sewing Industry
The home sewing industry deals with the production and selling of nonin-
dustrial sewing machines, notions, retail fabrics, patterns, and publications.
Home sewing is done for many personal reasons, including
for the feeling of achievement of having made a finished, usable item from
basic raw materials
for proper fit of a specific body shape, when ready-made clothing is only fi
made in general sizes from standard “average” measurements for each size
for creative individuality, or to achieve fashion self-expression that is dif-
ferent from the garments of others who buy ready-made clothing that
sometimes seems to all look alike
