Long ago, people had to sew their own garments. Today, however, ready-
made clothing is available from retailers to almost all people. Commercially-
produced clothing exists in a multitude of sizes, qualities, fashion levels, and
price ranges. For these reasons and because busy personal schedules do not
allow for time-consuming sewing projects, less home sewing of apparel is
done. Some hobby sewing has increased, such as making quilts.
Additionally, the savings from sewing are less significant today. The price fi
of store-bought garments has decreased because of low-wage production and
discount retailing. At the same time, the price of retail fabrics has increased
