To sponsor seminars, conventions/expositions, and trade shows that dis-
seminate new industry information among the members, such as new
ideas, equipment, etc. Conventions or trade shows are usually held once
a year (annually) with general sessions (meetings) to attend and commer-
cial booths set up to show products in a large exhibit hall. Additionally,
specifi educational seminars, offering instruction on various subjects of fic
interest to the members, may be held throughout the year.
To provide technical assistance and support through Internet help sites and t
trouble-shooting services to help solve day-to-day business and equip-
ment problems.
To provide networking opportunities. During networking, members
exchange ideas, information, or services, forming an interconnected or
interrelated chain of communication.
One trade organization that relates to the entire pipeline is The Fashion
Group International (FGI). It is a global, nonprofi professional organization fit
with 5,000 members working in apparel, accessories, beauty, home, and all
other parts of the fashion industry. The FGI is a leading authority on the
business of fashion and design that helps its members become more effective
in their careers. FGI provides insights on major trends as well as network-
ing opportunities to exchange information, ideas, and resources beneficial to fi
career growth and to accessing the fashion marketplace. Figure 4.12 lists the
goals of the organization.
Headquarters for the Fashion Group International are in New York City
and with regional chapters in fashion centers around the world. Through its
Foundation, educational programs devoted to fashion are available. It also
offers internship programs, scholarships for studying fashion-related busi-
nesses, and career counseling services.
The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is a strong and active
association of individual interior design professionals. They may practice in
home design or such commercial areas as offi and retail design. fice Industry
Partner members include interior furnishings manufacturers and trade orga-
nizations. The society maintains high standards among interior designers.
Techtextil is the main trade show for technical textiles and nonwovens.
Recently it has focused on the global textile market, innovative high-perfor-
mance fi bers, and new application for developed textiles.
The trade group for the home sewing industry is the American Sewing Guild
(ASG). It is a national nonprofi organization with chapters across the country fit
dedicated to those who believe sewing is a rewarding and creative activity.
Members meet monthly to learn new sewing skills, network with other sewers,
and participate in community service sewing projects. Membership benefitsfi
include a members-only magazine, online sewing classes, special offers from
industry, contests, an annual conference, and sewing-related travel and tours.
Other trade associations will be discussed throughout this text with the
specifi subject matter that applies to each group. fic
