Mechatronics is a field that combines mech-
anical and electrical technology with information,
computer, and control systems. A mechatron-
ics engineer unites the principles of electronics,
mechanics, and computing to develop, improve,
and operate automation technologies. Examples
of these technologies are industrial robots and
automated guided vehicles used in industries like
computer integrated manufacturing.
High school students interested in a mecha-
tronics engineering career should take a variety
of STEM courses. Such courses include tech-
nology courses related to digital electronics and
engineering design; mathematics courses, such
as trigonometry and calculus; and physics.
Many postsecondary institutions offer degrees directly related to mechatronics
engineering and technology. Programs typically include multiple levels of calculus
and physics as the foundation. Further courses in statics, material properties,
circuits, fluid mechanics, and automated control systems are included in the
program. Programs also focus on engineering design to meet the specific objectives
of applications requiring new automated control systems. Many mechatronics
engineering jobs require a graduate degree in science.
Individuals pursuing a degree in mechatronics should be able to think analytically
and critically. They should be comfortable working in a collaborative environment.
Experience in robotics and automation and a solid foundation in mathematics and
science are required.
Mechatronics engineers are hired in many industries, including automotive,
aerospace, manufacturing, mining, forestry, and defense. However, many
mechatronics engineers have created their own companies. Other jobs that can
be obtained with a degree in mechatronics include control systems engineer,
manufacturing engineer, mechanical engineer, electrical engineer, and automation
engineer. Because industries seek to automate and improve their processes and
services by integrating the latest hardware and software developments, these
engineers are in high demand.
A mechatronics engineer may work on the following types of projects:

Enhancing manufacturing production systems using electronic and
mechanical processes combined with new computer technology.

Developing new technologies and products to extend the ability to
automate processes, such as extracting raw materials from the earth.

Building and testing new robotics technology to solve industrial problems.
Organizations related to this career path include the American Society of
Mechanical Engineers, Society of Manufacturing Engineers, and Institute of
Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
