A A
academic study. Learning through textbooks,
discussion groups, instructors, and other
classroom activities. (15)
Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND).
The largest organization for food and
nutrition professionals. It includes the
Accreditation Council for Education in
Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND), which
grants accreditation status to approved higher
education programs. The AND also provides
educational programs and conferences,
research updates, and information on current
trends. In addition, the AND credentials
individuals through the Commission on
Dietetic Registration. (6)
account manager. A professional in a
business setting who is responsible for
the overall satisfaction of a major client
or customer, selling products or services,
and understanding the desires, needs, and
problems of individuals within the client
company. (13)
accredited financial counselor. A financial
counselor who has received certification
from the Association for Financial
Counseling and Planning Education. (13)
action plan. A systematic plan for attaining
your goals. (16)
activity assistant. One who assists an activity
director. (12)
activity director. A professional who works to
meet the leisure and educational needs of
the elderly or disabled. Activity directors
may work in adult day care programs,
retirement communities, senior citizen
centers, hospices, and assisted living or
long-term care facilities. Their clients may
also include individuals of any age who
have disabilities. (12)
administrative dietitian. A dietitian who
manages food service operations, often in
noncommercial food service organizations
such as educational institutions, health
care facilities, correctional institutions,
businesses and industries, government
agencies, and the military. Responsibilities
include menu planning, purchasing, and
supervising staff in food preparation and
delivery. (6)
adult education. Educational opportunities
for adults outside the traditional degree-
seeking programs of colleges and
universities. Generally administered
through state and community agencies,
adult education may include adult literacy
programs, workforce development
programs, technical training, high school
degree equivalency programs, English
as a second language (ESL) programs, or
basic academic skill development in math,
science, or computers. (10)
Age Discrimination in Employment Act
of 1967 (ADEA). A law that protects
individuals who are 40 years of age or older
from discrimination because of age. (16)
American Job Center. A comprehensive online
source that provides a single access point
for key federal programs and critical local
resources to help you research careers,
prepare for careers, and locate specific jobs.

federal law that prohibits employment
