Exercising the elbow • Grasp and support the patient’s wrist with one hand and the elbow with your other hand. • Flexion—bend the arm so the same- side shoulder is touched, if possible (Figure 13.53A). • Extension—straighten the arm (Figure 13.53B). 7. Exercising the shoulder • Grasp and support the patient’s wrist with one hand and the elbow with your other hand. • Flexion—raise the arm straight out in front of the patient and over the head (Figure 13.50A). • Extension—bring the arm down to the side (Figure 13.50B). Unless contraindicated, place the elbow at the same level as the shoulder. Move the forearm down toward the body. • External rotation—move the forearm toward the head (Figure 13.52B).
