and transportation within the city. If you planned
the trip yourself, you would need to contact at
least four different hospitality companies.
On the other hand, a professional travel plan-
ner could contact all the hospitality companies and
make all the arrangements. The planner would then
offer a package trip to Detroit. A travel package in-
cludes trip arrangements for several segments of the
hospitality industry, such as transportation, lodging,
meals, and entertainment. One fee is charged for the
total package that covers all arrangements.
Many cities, states, and countries have offi ces
that promote tourism, which helps their econo-
mies grow. Tourism offi ces advertise their location
as a great place to visit. They develop brochures,
print and Internet ads, and radio and TV commer-
cials to encourage tourists to visit. Large U.S. cities
often have a convention and visitors bureau that
advertises the unique heritage and ecology sites,
festivals, attractions, and recreational facilities in
the region. The brochure helps potential visitors
understand the products and services available. It
also connects potential visitors to the businesses
that will serve them when they arrive.
Each state has a government offi ce or agency
that promotes the state as a tourist destination. Ex-
amples include the Texas Economic Development
& Tourism Department, and the Indiana Offi ce of
Tourism Development. One of the most famous
and successful state advertising campaigns was
developed in New York. The 1970s “I LOVE NEW
YORK” campaign marketed tourism and vaca-
tions in the state of New York. The slogan and its
logo are still recognized around the world.
Recreation
Recreation is any activity that people do for
rest, relaxation, and enjoyment. The goal of recre-
ation is to refresh a person’s body and mind. Differ-
ent people enjoy different forms of recreation. You
might enjoy seeing a movie, but your friend might
prefer visiting a museum or going to a ball game.
The recreation industry consists of providers
of activities for rest, relaxation, and enjoyment.
Types of recreation operations include entertain-
ment, spectator and participatory sports, and at-
tractions. Entertainment businesses provide a show
for you to watch. Examples include movies, live
theater, and concerts. Spectator sports are sports
that you watch others play, such as a professional
football game. Participatory sports are sports you
take part in yourself, such as golf or skiing.
Attractions are temporary or permanent places
of special interest to visit. Attractions such as
amusement parks are entertainment businesses.
Other attractions are nonprofi t operations, often
sponsored by local or state governments. Exam-
ples include festivals, state fairs, museums, and
zoos, 1-9. The U.S. National Park Service has almost
