Chapter 1 Assessment
Summary
People interact with their housing. Their housing
affects them, and they affect their housing.
Housing helps satisfy people’s physical and
psychological needs and can help them move
toward self-actualization.
Beauty, self-expression, and creativity are other
needs people meet through housing.
Each person’s housing refl ects the lifestyle he or
she has chosen.
Needs and values are closely related. The needs
and values of people and living units vary,
however, as they move through the life cycles.
Housing affects and helps improve the quality of
life for both individuals and society.
Terms in Action

small images that visually represent each

write each term on a note card and paste the
image that describes or explains the term on
the opposite side. Use the fl ash cards to review
the terms.

a member who works from home.
3. Assess needs What needs and values are met
by housing? Make a personal assessment and
list your needs and values in order of priority. In

by housing?
4. Analyze space Analyze and describe how
the use of a spare bedroom may change
depending on whether the living unit includes
the following: small children, teens, people with
hobbies, a person working at home, or retirees.
5. Analyze behavior In teams, brainstorm
actions or behaviors that may be useful for
enhancing creativity for interior designers.
Discuss your team’s ideas with the class.
