Chapter 1 Assessment
children and youth are homeless? How does
homelessness affect their learning? Look
for facts about homeless youth and make a
printout of a fact that surprised you. What
options exist for preventing homelessness or
meeting the needs of homeless people?
Give an illustrated oral report to the class of
your fi ndings.
12. Research and speaking Use reliable online
resources to research cliff dwellings. Determine
who built them and why they were built.
Find out how many different sites containing
cliff dwellings exist in Colorado. How many
households do these cliff villages contain? Why
did the people build their homes in the cliffs?
Discuss your fi ndings in class.
13. CTE career readiness practice Use a digital
camera to photograph examples of housing in
your community that address a household’s
psychological needs. Take separate pictures to
demonstrate examples of housing that meet the
following four needs: security, love/acceptance,
esteem, and self-actualization. Use presentation
software or a school-approved web application
to display your examples for the class. Describe
why the housing example in each picture meets
a particular need.
Design Practice
14. Design for privacy Obtain permission to
rearrange furniture in a part of your home, or
the home of someone else you know, to provide
more privacy. How did the new furniture
arrangement lead to more privacy? How did
household members react to the change? Report
your actions and results to the class.
15. Portfolio When you apply for a job or
perhaps to a college, you may need to describe
your qualifi cations to others. A portfolio is a
selection of related materials that you collect
and organize. These materials show your
qualifi cations, skills, and talents. There are two
common types of portfolios: print and electronic
portfolios (e-portfolios). An e-portfolio is also
known as a digital portfolio. To learn more
about portfolios, do the following:
A. Use the Internet to search for print
portfolio and e-portfolio. Read two or more
articles about each type of portfolio. Then
complete an article summary. In your own
words briefl y describe each type.
B. You will be creating a portfolio for this
class. Which portfolio type would you
prefer to create? Write a paragraph
describing the type of portfolio you prefer.
16. Portfolio Building a quality portfolio about
your design experience is essential to having a
successful career in housing and interior design.
Along with the design examples you will create
throughout this course, you will also need to
include writing samples that showcase your
ability to communicate well in writing. In one
page or less, write a goal statement about your
future career as an interior designer. Why do you
want to pursue this career? What aspects of this
career ignite your passion for housing and interior
design? Use word-processing software to create
your goal statement. Save a copy of the document
for your electronic and paper portfolios.
17. Portfolio Create a storyboard that refl ects
housing appropriate for a family progressing
through the six stages of the family life cycle.
Use online photos or images, magazines, or
other sources to show the stages. Be sure to
cite the sources of your images. Assume the
following details about the family:
Beginning—couple lives on one partner’s
earnings while the earnings of the other go
toward savings and paying college loans
Childbearing—the family has one full-time
wage earner working outside the home,
one part-time wage earner working from
the home, and two children under age four
Parenting—the family has saved enough
for a down payment on a moderately
priced home, the part-time wage earner
now works full-time outside the home,
and all members are active in sports
Midyears—couple frequently entertains
children and grandchildren on weekends
and travels as much as possible
Aging—one partner lives alone after the
death of another
