Chapter 1 Careers in Industrial Maintenance 19 training includes product receiving and storage, inven- tory management, safety, and transportation concepts. Th e Society for Maintenance & Reliability Profes- sionals (SMRP) is a nonprofi t group that provides cer- tifi cation and education for maintenance professionals. SMRP off ers a certifi cation for a certifi ed maintenance and reliability technician (CMRT). Finally, certifi cations in other areas are sometimes very useful. For instance, most manufacturers view a certifi ca- tion in HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) refrigerant handling (EPA Section 608) as a valuable asset. Certifi cations through your local Red Cross in fi rst aid and CPR are also worthwhile. CHAPTER WRAP-UP You will most likely not spend your entire career at one location with one employer. With that in mind, you need to be fl exible, have an overall plan, and keep your goal in sight. Some of the best technicians make more than $100,000 a year. Th is is only possible through hard work, study, discipline, and self-improvement. Employers are always looking for highly qualifi ed and motivated tech- nicians. Apply yourself so that you become that needed technician. 1.6.3 Other Certifi cations Th e Manufacturing Skill Standards Council (MSSC) off ers certifi cations for production workers. Certifi ed production technician (CPT) certifi cation focuses on safety, quality practices and measurement, manufactur- ing processes and production, and maintenance aware- ness. Certifi ed logistics technician (CLT) certifi cation comprises two layers: certifi ed logistics associate (CLA) and certifi ed logistics technician (CLT). CLA subjects range from safety, logistics, and material handling to quality control, communication, and teamwork. CLT T E C H T I P Ask about Certifi cations Ask your instructors which certifi cations they deem most valuable for local industries and employ- ers. Also, take note of certifi cations mentioned in regard to jobs advertised locally and on industry websites. These sources will help you focus on the certifi cations that will add the most to your value as a potential employee. Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc.
