The elements and principles can be used in other disciplines (such as architecture) but may have different meanings. Learning the design vocabulary of other disciplines is important The elements of design include line, shape, form, space, texture, pattern, color, and light. The principles of design are the guidelines that govern the choices and actions designers take to achieve good design. They include methods by which the elements of design are organized. The principles of design include proportion, scale, focal point (emphasis), balance, rhythm, and harmony. Visual literacy results from the harmonious, appropriate use of the elements and principles of design to meet client needs. The concepts of unity and variety together help designers achieve harmony in their designs. Interior designers manipulate the elements and principles of design to adapt and transform spaces that meet client needs for function and beauty. Chapter Vocabulary Create a three-column chart.
