Chapter 7 The Sensory Systems 297 er Lab Investigations 50. Survey friends and family to identify as many cases as possible of eye and ear disorders. Document each person’s disorder, gender, and age at the time of onset. As a class, compile your data and develop a summary chart or graph. What conclusions can you draw? 51. Create a flyer highlighting strategies for preventing blindness. Target the flyer to senior citizens’ groups. What key points would you include? How would you design the flyer to attract the attention of your intended audience? Share your flyer and the reasons for your content and design decisions with the class. 52. Perform an experiment to investigate how the human senses distinguish potent smells. Note: Do not perform this activity if you have allergies to strong odors. Instructions: The instructor will set up four smelling stations around the classroom, one for each essential oil, labeling the stations only by number: 1, 2, 3, and 4. Use a data gathering form similar to the one shown in Figure 7.29 to record your observations about each smell. After completing all of the stations, answer these questions: Were you able to correctly identify each essential oil? Which of the essential oils did you find appealing to your senses? Research the medicinal values of each of these essential oils and note their value on your data sheet. Building Your Portfolio 53. Make digital copies of the reports you created and the research studies you performed as you worked through this chapter. Create a document or folder called "The Sensory Systems" and insert the documents. Add this document or folder to your personal portfolio. Writing Write a list of detailed instructions that you would give to a new mother regarding prevention and treatment of ear infections. After each instruction, explain why that particular instruction is important. In preparing your list, be sure to use the new vocabulary that you have learned in this chapter. 49. Speaking and Listening With two classmates, role-play a situation in which you are a physician’s assistant counseling a young mother and father regarding ear infections. As a basic guide for your counseling, use the list that you developed for the writing activity in #43. Adjust your vocabulary as necessary while responding to their questions and clarifying information. Then switch roles.
