Pectus excavatum (PEK-tus ek-skuh-VAY-
tum), commonly known as “funnel chest,” is a
condition in which the sternum (breastbone)
is abnormally depressed (displaced inward).
The condition is thought to be congenital.
The term pectus excavatum comes directly
from the Latin words pectus (breast), ex- (a
prefix meaning “out” or “away from”), and
cavus (“hollow”). The suffix -um is a noun
form that means “structure.”
