Options
The average worker spends 36 percent of
his or her day working, as shown in Figure
1-2. This means a choice of career is one of
the most important decisions a person will
make as an adult.
A job is the work a person does regularly
in order to earn money. A career is a series of

business field requiring similar education,
training, or skills. For example, a doctor has
a career in the medical profession. The doctor
would have started as an intern and then
become a resident before becoming a doctor.

Studying the career clusters is a good
starting point to see where your interests
lie. The career clusters, as shown in Figure
1-3, are 16 groups of occupational and career
specialties that share common knowledge
and skills.
