Obtain a vehicle to be used in this job. Your instructor may direct you to perform this job on a shop vehicle or engine. 2. Gather the tools needed to perform the following job. Refer to the project’s tools and materials list. Change Oil and Filter Caution Before performing any service or test driving any vehicle, always place disposable covers over the upholstery and steering wheel and place mats on the carpet to prevent stains. 1. Obtain the correct oil filter and type and grade of motor oil. Brand, grade, and weight of oil:________________________________________________ Brand and stock number of oil filter:____________________________________________ 2. Run the engine until it reaches operating temperature. 3. Raise the vehicle on a lift or raise it with a jack and secure it on jack stands. The vehicle should be level when raised to allow all of the oil to drain from the pan. Warning The vehicle must be raised and supported in a safe manner. Always use approved lifts or jacks and jack stands. See Figure 6-1. 4. Place the oil drain pan under the engine oil pan. Figure 6-2 shows a typical oil drain pan. 5. Remove the oil drain plug. A few engines have two drain plugs. Figure 6-1. When raising a vehicle, make sure the lift pads are positioned at recommended lift points.
