The seal should be undamaged to prevent leaks. Check the drain plug’s threads for damage. If the drain plug is damaged, replace it. Are the drain plug threads and seal OK? Yes ___ No ___ 7. Loosen the oil filter using a filter wrench and remove the filter from the engine. If neces- sary reposition the oil drain pan under the filter or use a second drain pan. 8. Wipe off the oil filter mounting base and check that the old filter seal is not stuck on the base. 9. Check the new filter to ensure that it is the correct replacement. 10. Fill the new filter with the correct grade of motor oil. If the oil filter is mounted with the opening down, skip this step. 11. Smear a thin film of clean engine oil on to the new oil filter rubber seal as shown in Figure 6-3. 12. Screw on the new oil filter and hand tighten it. 13. Turn the filter an additional 1/2 to 3/4 turn. 14. Install and tighten the oil drain plug. 15. Remove the oil filler cap from the engine. Caution Before performing any work under the hood of a vehicle, always place covers over the fenders to prevent scratches and dings. 16. Open the first oil container and pour the oil into the filler opening in the engine.
