Copyright Goodheart-Willcox Co., Inc. Motorcycles: Fundamentals, Service, Repair 336 Important practices that make wheel truing easier are: Progressively tighten and loosen spoke nipples. Keep all spokes at approximately the same tension (snug). Lubricate spoke nipples and threads. Do not try to change runout with only a few spokes. Alternately check lateral and radial runout throughout the truing process. Properly tighten all spokes. Final Tightening of Spokes Proper final tightening of spokes should have minimal effect on runout. Use tape or crayon to divide the wheel into quarters (four equal sections), as shown in Figure 16-26. Start by tightening quarter number one. Then tighten quar- ter number three, number two, and finally, number four. Make a final check of runout and offset. Also, check the spokes for the correct tightness. Use a spoke torque wrench or check them by tone. Spoke B To move rim to the right, tighten spoke A and loosen spoke B. With disc brakes, place a straightedge on the disc mounting boss and measure to rim. With drum brakes, lay the straightedge on the drum edge and measure down to the rim. Compare measurements with specifications. If specifications are not indicated, the rim must be centered. Tightening sequence is one, three, two, four. Tighten each spoke equally.
