16 Unit 1 Your Development and Relationships
Section 1-2
Growing and Changing
Objectives
After studying this section, you will be able to
• describe physical, intellectual, emotional, and social changes that occur
during adolescence.
• give examples of ways to handle negative emotions.
• relate how the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social changes that take
place during adolescence help you achieve certain developmental tasks.
The teen years are often a challenging and exciting time of life. Your body
will be changing in many ways. You will begin to think in new ways. You will
begin to have feelings that may be new to you. Your relationships with others
will change.
You will also be making choices now that can impact your future.
Knowing what to expect can make it easier to adjust to new feelings and
changes. Understanding that these changes are normal can help you accept
and enjoy what you are feeling and look forward to what’s in store for you.
Growth and
Development
People pass through three
major stages of life. You are
entering the stage of life called
adolescence, which is the
stage between childhood and
adulthood. Within each stage,
developmental tasks, or certain
skills and behavior patterns, should
be achieved, 1-10. For instance,
preparing for your future is a
developmental task of adolescence.

Changes During Adolescence
The changes that take place during adolescence
will affect the ways you act and think. Your actions
directly relate to your decisions, which can affect your
future. The more you know about these changes,
the easier it will be to understand them in yourself.
Through these changes, you will also realize you are
special and unique. There is no one else like you, with
your exact feelings and ideas. At the same time, you
will know that what you are feeling and experiencing
is a normal part of the growth process.
