Quick Look 2.2.5 Personal Data Online There are many websites that aggregate data from other sources. Many of the sites charge a fee, but there are some that will give you some information for free. 1. Launch a web browser, and navigate to the Spokeo website (www.spokeo.com). 2. In the search box, enter your name or a parent’s name, and click the Search button. All matches will be returned. Depending on how common the name is, there could be quite a few selections. 3. If needed, use the tools to fi lter the results by location. Notice relatives are connected to each result. This may help in identifying the correct person. 4. Click the link corresponding to the correct person. A map of the current address is displayed along with some basic information. The other information on Spokeo is fee-based. 5. Navigate to the Zaba Search website (www.zabasearch.com). This site will give an address for a person you enter. 6. Search for the same person as on the Spokeo website. Did you get different information or was it identical? 7. Navigate to the Pipl website (www.pipl.com). This is another site for locating people. 8. Search for the same person as on the other two sites. Did this site provide any additional information? Advanced Internet Searches Internet searches are often used to fi nd personal information and other data on a target’s digital footprint. Most Internet search engines have advanced methods to help fi nd data. Figure 2-14 shows fi ve tips for conducting advanced searches. Most average users are not aware of these methods. For purposes of this discussion, the search engine Google will be used. However, the tools often work in any search engine.
