Chapter 2 Information Security Fundamentals 55 Enclosing specifi c keywords within quotation marks tells the search engine all of those words must be present in the results. For example, entering “John Smith New York NY” into Google will only return results that contain all of those words. By contrast, entering the same words without the quotation marks will return results that contain any of those words. A hyphen (-) can be used to exclude words from the search. For example, entering eagles -football -Philadelphia into Google will search for anything that contains the word eagles. However, of those found, any that include the word foot- ball or Philadelphia will not be included in the list of results. In effect, this search will be focused away from the popular NFL team. Similarly, a plus sign (+) can be used to ensure certain words are included in the results. A search can be conducted on a specifi c site. For example, entering site:Microsoft.com Bill Gates into Google will only return results from sites within Microsoft.com. This search could be further refi ned by enclosing Bill Gates in quo- tation marks. That would limit the results to only items within Microsoft.com that include both Bill and Gates. Searches can be limited to a specifi c numeric value, such as date or range of dates. For example, to information about PlayStation in only the current year, enter Playstation..2018 into Google (assuming the current year is 2018). The two periods (dots) tell Google not to display any results before this year. To specify a range of dates, separate the dates with two periods.
