Chapter Summary Section 1.1 Management Responsibilities LO 1.1-1 Define the term management. Management is the process of controlling and making decisions about an organization, as well as overseeing others to ensure activities are performed efficiently and effectively. It is the way work is accomplished in an organization through the efforts of other people. LO 1.1-2 Summarize the functions of management. Planning is the process of setting goals and objectives and deciding how to accomplish them. Organizing is the coordination of activities and resources needed to accomplish a plan. Staffing is the process of recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating, and compensating employees. Leading is the process of influencing others to work toward the attainment of common goals. Controlling is the continuous process of comparing actual outcomes with planned outcomes and taking corrective action when goals are not met. LO 1.1-3 Identify three levels of management. Three levels of management include senior management, middle management, and supervisory management. These levels are described as the management pyramid. Section 1.2 Managers Defined LO 1.2-1 Discuss the term manager. A manager is a person who directs and oversees the work of others in order to achieve the goals of an organization. Managers supervise others, assign tasks, and oversee workflow. They also act as communicators between their teams and senior management. LO 1.2-2 Describe managers in today’s workplace. Managers in today’s workplace are in tune to business and understand what customers need as well as what their employees need. They are forward thinking and work to improve the organization as a whole by focusing on 21st century issues, such as the value of employees, importance of diversity, and the use of technology. LO 1.2-3 Identify managerial roles according to Mintzberg. Mintzberg classified 10 specific managerial roles into three main categories: interpersonal roles, informational roles, and decisional roles. LO 1.2-4 Cite examples of skills of successful managers.
