Unit 9 Architectural Drawings 161
Figure 9-6.
Interior elevations showing layouts for two rooms. Compare these views to Figure 9-4.
(CR architecture + design)
the entire structure, Figure 9-7. A wall section
shows the entire wall of a building from fl oor
to fl oor or fl oor to roof. See Figure 9-8. A wall
section defi nes all materials and dimensions per-
taining to the particular wall. A detail section is
simply a portion of a building drawn at a larger
scale to clarify the construction requirements.
See Figure 9-9.
Sometimes, building materials indicated
on a section drawing are identifi ed in a legend
located elsewhere on the plan. This helps orga-
nize the information and reduces crowding. See
Figure 9-10.
Architectural Details
A detail shows a small portion of the building
to clarify the materials and type of construction
used. Details are made at a larger scale than plan
drawings, elevations, and sections. A detail draw-
ing may be placed on the same sheet as the cor-
responding plan or elevation view. Otherwise, the
detail is found on a separate sheet and referenced
by detail and sheet numbers.
Schedules
Schedules are one of the most useful tools
in a set of construction documents. A schedule
is a listing of materials or products required in
the structure. See Figure 9-11. Typical schedules
used on architectural drawings include door
schedules, window schedules, and room fi nish
schedules. Schedules make it convenient for the
designer to provide a large amount of informa-
tion in one location. Typically, schedules spec-
ify product types and sizes, number of items
required, and manufacturer information. A sym-
bol or tag identifi es each item in the schedule.
The same identifi cation is used on the drawing
where the item is referenced.
A door schedule specifi es information for all
doors shown on the fl oor plan and elevation
drawings. Each door is identifi ed with a num-
bered symbol or tag. The number designation
typically includes the room number where the
door is to be installed. Additional data includes
the door type, size, fi nish, fi re rating, and any
required hardware, such as hinges, knobs, and
locks. If any special door treatments are required,
they are also listed.
A window schedule is similar to a door schedule,
except it specifi es information for windows. On the
fl oor plan and elevation drawings, each window is
identifi ed with an identifi cation number.
A room fi nish schedule specifi es fi nal treatments
required for fl oors, walls, and ceilings in each
room of the building. Each room is designated
a number, and the fi nishes for each surface are
listed along with any special treatments required.
