Motorized dampers. These open and close to increase or decrease
the amount of air introduced to a particular area in response to
some condition, such as occupancy.
Back draft dampers. Allow air to fl ow in only one direction and
closes if air fl ows in the opposite direction.
Dampers also play a large role in ensuring the safety of occupants in
a conditioned space. If smoke or fi re is detected in a duct, dampers close
to prevent the air-conditioning system’s blower from potentially feeding
the fi re. Symbols for smoke and fi re dampers are shown in Figure 5-52.
5.4.4 Additional Components and Accessories
Although a legend showing the symbols used on the particular set of
drawings will be provided with the plans used on the job site, Figure 5-53
displays some additional symbols you will likely encounter when reading
air-distribution prints.
