Image Analysis and Interpretation
During image analysis, information from the image is gathered and
analyzed by computer software. Using algorithms, the software identi-
fies and measures features of the digital image. After all the features are
analyzed, the image information is interpreted. The goal of a machine
vision system is image interpretation, which enables a robot to make deci-
sions about the tasks that must be performed.
Image analysis computer programs, Figure 10-11, provide a powerful
computer-based development environment with flexible programming,
debugging, and testing capabilities. Vision guidance and inspection appli-
cations may be used to enhance a variety of robotic operations. Vision-
guided robots are used to improve the accuracy of machining, handling,
and other industrial operations. Image analysis for inspection is commonly
used to collect and record dimensional measurements. This provides a non-
destructive method of quality control testing.

defects found in the pieces are automatically reported by type, location, and size on a color display
screen. (Adept Technology, Inc.)
