Chapter 2 Understanding Work-Based Learning
Identity theft occurs when someone uses your name and pretends
to be you. Stealing a Social Security number is one of the fastest-
growing crimes in the country. Your Social Security number should be
kept private and given only to people who need to know it. The Social
Security Administration suggests you ask the following questions
before giving out your Social Security number:

Gnvvhkklxmtladqadtrdc
Vg‘sg‘oodmrheHqdetrd
Vg‘sk‘vqdpthqdrldsnfhudlxmtladq
If you have lost your Social Security card, you must apply for a
replacement card at a Social Security office. You should also apply for
a replacement card if you change your name. You must show evidence
of your age, identity, and US citizenship or immigrant status when
you apply. You can learn more about the proper use of Social Security
numbers and the application process through the Social Security
Administration.
If you are under age 16 (under age 18 in some states), you will also
need a work permit before you begin work. A work permit makes it
legal for otherwise underage students to work for an employer. A work
permit limits the number of hours a student can work each school day
and the types of jobs a student can do. Work permits may be issued by
schools. Check with your school to see if you will need a permit.
Abide by the Training Agreement
You will be expected to assume the responsibilities outlined
in a training agreement during your work experience. A training
agreement is an agreement between you, your school, and your
employer. The obligations of each party are outlined. The training
agreement may have different names or formats depending on
your specific work-based learning program. Such an agreement
is similar to a contract. It outlines the purposes of the work-based
