Name ________________________________________________________________ Date ________________________ Class ________________ Lab 3-3 Performance Monitoring The normal or average conditions of a system should be recorded in order to have a starting point from which data comparisons are made. This is known as a baseline. In this activity, you will establish a baseline of performance counters. Learning Goals • Create a performance baseline. • Compare observed performance to the established baseline. Materials • Virtual machine or other machine for which you have administrator permissions • Microsoft Windows 10 Procedures 1. Click the Windows Start menu, and then enter performance monitor in the search box. Select the Performance Monitor application in the search results. 2. In the Performance Monitor, expand the Monitoring Tools branch, and then select the Performance Monitor branch in the left-hand pane. 3. Add the following counters. A. Memory Available MBytes B. Network Adapter Bytes Total/sec your physical network interface controller/card (NIC) (not a virtual NIC) C. LogicalDisk % Free Space 4. Launch the Windows Command Prompt, and ping your default gateway 50 times. How did this affect your statistics? _ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 5. In the Performance Monitor, change the graph type to Report. Record the amount of available memory. _ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 6. Open the Calculator, WordPad, and PowerShell programs. Record the available memory as reported in the Performance Monitor. What impact did opening these programs have on the counter? _ __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 7. In the Performance Monitor, change the graph type to Line. Change the properties to include the following title: System Monitoring. Add a horizontal grid, and change the background to a light yellow. Change the color for Available MBytes to a darker color, and make the line thicker. Change the Bytes Total/sec counter to a different darker color and the line type to dashed. Close the properties dialog box when done. 8. Right-click on the graph, and click Save Image As… in the shortcut menu. Save the graph as a GIF file. 9.
