Summary
Planning your future begins with learning
about yourself. Your self-concept begins to
develop early and affects your self-esteem.
As a unique person, you have needs, wants,
values, and standards. Each one affects your
behavior. The way you meet your needs,
the values you adopt, and the standards
you set for yourself have a great effect on
your life. To meet challenges, prepare for
change and work toward achieving your
potential.
Learning more about your interests,
aptitudes, and abilities is the next step in
matching yourself to the right career. Many
resources are available for gathering career
information. Exploring the career clusters
may help you choose your personal plan of
study. In setting your career goals, consider
the education and training you will need.
Investigate whether you will need a license
or certifi cation. Analyze other factors, such
as employment outlook. Making a career
decision now will help you get started in
reaching your goals.
Networking and other resources will
help you fi nd job openings. Applying for job
openings may involve sending a résumé
and cover message, applying online, or
applying in person. A job interview is your
chance to make a favorable impression on
the interviewer. After the interview, sending
a follow-up letter is important. Another
option in job hunting is to create your own
job by becoming an entrepreneur.

are infl uenced by each of the following:
A. personality
B. self-concept
C. self-esteem
2. Analyze information. What advice
would you give to a friend who makes
this statement: “I really feel down! I’m the
shortest one in gym class, my grades
aren’t that great, and I don’t feel like I fi t
in!” Base your response on the principles
of self-concept and self-esteem.
3. Recognize values. Describe how
people might show they have the
following values: beauty, love, security,
adventure.
4. Draw conclusions. Why is evaluating
your current interests, aptitudes, and
abilities an important part of career
planning?
5. Summarize details. Briefl y summarize
the factors you think will affect your
career choices.
6. Making inferences. How can
a person’s self-concept impact
relationships with family and peers?
Create a graph or image to represent
your response.

7. Collaboration and communication.
In small groups, discuss Maslow’s
theory of human needs. How do the
levels relate to each other? Then
research metamotivation. Together,
create a graphic representation of
metamotivation in relation to the
hierarchy of needs.
8. Entrepreneurial literacy. What
recommendations would you make
to a friend who is thinking of starting
a business? Use information learned
in the chapter as well as additional
sources to form your response.
