direct deposit. A method of transferring money
into an account through electronic means. (17-1)

direct tax. A type of tax that is charged directly to

diverse. Differing from one another. (2-3)
diversifi ed. Term to describe money invested in
many different stocks and bonds, so decreases
in some are offset by increases in others. (17-2)
diversity. Condition of a group whose members
represent many different cultures. (3-1)
dividend. A distribution of a company’s profi ts to
a stockholder. (17-2)
dot. A pattern symbol used to match seams and
other construction details. (21-1)
dramatic play. A form of play involving role-playing.
A child imitates another person or acts out a
situation, but does so alone. (11-1)
dress code. A standard of dress that is enforced in
a social setting. (19-1)
drug abuse. The use of a drug for a purpose other
than it was intended. (7-3)
dry cleaning. The process of cleaning clothes using
an organic chemical solvent instead of water.

dual-career family. A family in which both spouses

dysfunctional family. A family that provides a
negative environment that discourages the
growth and development of family members.

smaller piece of fabric as a fl at, curved seam

elements of design. Color, line, texture, and form

emotional abuse. A form of abuse that happens
when one person purposely hurts another’s
self-concept through constant yelling, teasing,
or insulting. (7-3)
emotional growth. Development of the ability to
express feelings. (10-1)
emotional neglect. The failure to provide loving
care and attention to family members. (7-3)
empathy. The quality of understanding how
others feel even when personal feelings may
differ. (10-4)
emphasis. The center of interest in a design. (19-2)
empty nest syndrome. Feelings of loneliness and
depression some parents experience after their
children leave home. (10-5)
emulation. The act of imitating the behavior of
other people around you. (4-2)
enabler. Someone who unknowingly acts in ways
that contribute to an alcoholic’s or addict’s
drug use. (7-3)
endorse. Signing the back, left end of a check before
cashing or depositing it. (17-1)
enriched. A term used to describe a food product
that has nutrients added back to it that were
lost during processing. (13-1)
entrepreneur. A person who starts and manages
his or her own business. (1-3)
environment. All the conditions and situations
that surround and affect an individual. (10-1)
estate. What a person leaves behind when he or
she dies. (17-2)
ethnic group. A group of people who share
common racial and/or cultural characteristics,
such as national origin, language, religion,
and traditions. (10-1)
etiquette. Approved social conduct, or good
manners. (16-3)
eviction. A legal procedure that forces a tenant to
leave a property before the rental agreement
expires if he or she fails to uphold the terms
of the lease. (22-2)
expiration date. A date stamped on food products
such as yeast and baby formula indicating the
last day the product should be used or eaten.

extended family. A family structure that includes
other relatives, such as grandparents, aunts,
uncles, and/or cousins, living with parents
