lockstitch. A stitch made by a sewing machine
with thread coming from both the upper and
lower parts of the machine and locking securely
in the middle of the fabric layers being sewn.

media. Channels of mass communication, such as

menopause. Normal stoppage of menstrual cycles
in a middle-aged woman, possibly resulting

middle childhood. Stage of children between the

midlife crisis. Event caused by diffi culty adjusting
to the changes that occur during middle

mineral. An inorganic substance needed for
building tissues and regulating body functions.

mixed message. A means of communication in
which a person’s behavior contradicts his or

modeling. The act of adults exhibiting behaviors
in front of children, which the children then

modesty. A standard held by a cultural group
about the proper way to cover the body in

monochromatic color scheme. A color scheme
based on only one hue, which may be used in
various values and intensities for variety. (19-2)
mortgage. A loan used to pay for a home. (22-2)
motivation. A force that gives people a reason to
