professionalism. When a person conforms to
the conduct, aims, or qualities that mark a
profession. (16)
proficiency test. A test that measures skill and
knowledge in a subject area. (2)
proficient. Able move forward in
accomplishment. (7)
program director. A person who oversees
the mission, goals, and programs of an
organization, such as a child care center. (1)
programs of study. Rigorous sequences of
career and technical and academic courses
to prepare students for successful transition
from high school to postsecondary education/
credentialing and employment. (4)
Progressives. Members of the reform
movement during the Progressive Era. (3)
Project Head Start. A federal government program
designed to help preschool children from
low-income families develop the skills they need
for success in kindergarten and beyond. (4)
psychologist. A person who studies human behavior
and mental processes and develops theories to
explain why people behave the way they do. (1)
puberty. The physical transformation from a
child to an adult capable of reproduction. (8)

quotas. Limits. Immigration laws set limits for
people coming to the United States from other
countries. (3)
R
rapport. Harmonious relationship. (16)
real time. All students are online for class at the
same time. (13)
reciprocal agreements. In teaching, agreements
between states that allow teachers certified to
teach in one state to teach in another state that
is part of the agreement. (2)
reflective response. An activity in which
students think deeply about an issue or
something they have learned. (12)
reliability. A characteristic of an assessment that
measures the same over time—meaning the
results will be similar with different learners and
under different circumstances. (14)
repertoire. Your list of skills, activities, and
methods or strategies for teaching. (12)
resilience. The ability to bounce back after a
defeat or setback. (8)
résumé. An outline of your education,
achievements, and experiences, including
volunteer work and work experiences. (16)
role-playing. A learner-centered simulation that
involves students in acting out a role without a
script. (12)
rubric. A scoring tool that lists the criteria for judging
a particular type of work. It also describes
levels of quality for each of the criteria and is
often organized as a chart, with the criteria
(characteristics that count for scoring) on the left,
followed by columns that describe different levels
of quality for each characteristic. (14)

salary schedule. A chart or table that shows the
progression of employee wages over time. (1)
school funding gap. Challenge that occurs in
school districts with lower levels of income
from property taxes; tends to be in urban
areas that often have a higher proportion of
students who are from low-income families
and need a higher level of services. (5)
school policies. Overall guidelines that generally
address major issues such as attendance and
dress code. (In some districts these are called
rules, regulations, or procedures.) (15)
school-based curriculum. A set of curriculum
standards where teachers are involved in
making decisions about what is taught in their
classrooms and schools. (1)
scorecard. A tool for evaluating alternative
assessments that lists the characteristics or
factors to use when evaluating learning and
a maximum point value for each criterion but
does not describe levels of quality. (14)
self-concept. A person’s own assessment or
view of himself or herself. (7)
self-contained classrooms. A situation in which
the same teacher and group of students remain
in one classroom for most of the day, with one
teacher teaching most or all subjects. (1)
self-evaluation. Students’ assessment of their
own learning. (14)
sequence. Steps that occur in a predictable and
orderly manner. (6)
seriation. The ability to place objects in order by
a characteristic, such as smallest to largest. (7)
service-learning. A special type of unpaid
volunteer effort that combines classroom
learning with meaningful hands-on experience
to meet community needs. (2)
